Carman School #176
Carman School District No. 176 was established in 1884. The first school was built in a field at the south end of town (no photograph is available).
In 1891, sixteen lots were purchased at what is now the site of the Carman Elementary (156 2nd St. SW.), where a two-storey frame school was constructed.
When the school was destroyed by fire in 1901, it was replaced by a state-of-the-art brick building. The original school sign is now preserved at the Dufferin Historical Museum.
As Carman’s population continued to grow, the school district added a one-storey, steel-frame elementary school in 1950, while older students continued to attend classes in the brick school.
In 1961, both buildings were replaced. A new collegiate was constructed at 121 4th Ave. SE, while a new elementary school was built at its present location, 156 2nd St. SW.
The elementary school was later renamed École Carman Elementary School following the introduction of French Immersion programming.
